When You Rent Our Recently Acquired Balcony Gîte

in the Deep Southwest of France

Welcome to rooms with a view in the plus beau village of Lagrasse!

From the moment you open the substantial front door to this simply beautiful Balcony Gîte, Mother Nature invites you in with a sweeping vista of the tree-lined limestone cliffs across the way and lush plant life blooming all around. Droves of doves and swifts constantly coo and dart their way back and forth across the expansive sky above, roosters crow, church bells chime, and the Orbieu River provides soothing background music around the clock as it continues to flow by the rocky beach and garden terrace just below.

The rooms inside are equally open and airy with high-beamed ceilings, and French windows and doors leading out from the kitchen, living room and main bedroom directly onto the wisteria-draped riverside balcony. The kitchen and dining table area not only share that spectacularly timeless view, but are also naturally well-lit, well-equipped and easy to work in. The comfortably spacious rooms come complete with a progression of regional tile floors, thick stone walls and even an original arch remaining in the second bedroom. Overall it’s very well arranged, and big enough to live in without being too big. [Please see specifics below.]

Our Balcony Gîte also offers you both immediate easy access and ability to move around inside with all the rooms on the same ground floor of a respectfully restored medieval building. It’s centrally located just off the Place de la Halle, where the open market continues to provide for the Lagrasse community every Saturday morning – and now hopefully for you too!

What We Love

Don and Kay primarily live in northern California, where they both grew up together, and have since spent decades steeped in the business of wine and food. Both their active extended family and work lives continue to revolve around the relatively timeless passions for taking long walks and bike rides, tending vegetable and flower gardens, marveling at Mother Nature, feeling an integral part of their community, traveling to seek out new adventures, cooking together and gathering around to feast on life’s bounty. All of which is what brought them to the fertile valley of Lagrasse, for what they say feels like yet another full circle coming round.

Both Don and Kay grew up in Los Altos, California, before the computer industry took over what became the Silicon Valley, and it was still filled with acres and acres of Royal Blenheim apricot, almond, cherry, peach and prune trees. It was open, free, and ripe with fresh opportunities. They met in school when they were thirteen, and have been together ever since.

During the revolutionary late ‘60’s, they both went to the Universities of California at Berkeley and then Santa Cruz, where they joined anti-war organizations, went on marches, soaked up all the new music, studied early childhood education and graduated to became Montessori teachers. They got married in a redwood grove and moved north to the still agricultural County of Sonoma, where they bought a six-acre farm, put in a huge organic vegetable garden and fruit orchard, had 130 chickens and learned how to milk their own Nubian goats to also make butter and cheese.

They were passionate about finding ways to more sustainably raise healthy food that was also simply delicious, started opening restaurants to reflect that sensibility, and working in the naturally companionable local vineyards and wineries. Along the way they moved to the more centrally located historic town of Petaluma, Don became the winemaker for his own Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Méthode Champenoise Sparkling Wine production, and Kay became the executive chef at a series of local restaurants. She then ran her own cooking school for a number of years, and has recently started focusing more on her work as a consulting chef.
